On November 7, 2006, the first free-standing Hospice House in Eastern Iowa opened after a little more than a year of fundraising, planning and construction. Fundraising began on May 9, 2005, and in less than one year, over $7.4 million was raised to construct this facility which has become a home to many during the last days and weeks of life’s journey.
The 16-bed Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House is located in Bettendorf, Iowa near Maplecrest and Tech Drive. This location is central to the population base in the Quad Cities, no more than a 20-minute drive for most families. The area is easily accessible and offers a primary service area of a 25-mile radius.
Clarissa C. Cook, the wife of wealthy lawyer and financier Ebeneezer Cook, carried out his wishes after his death in 1871. His wishes were that the couple's wealth should be shared with those in need, and also would benefit the city of Davenport.
The legacy of Clarissa C. Cook, who lived a life of compassion and generosity, has continued for 126 years following her death and will continue for decades to come. The Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House will provide Quad Cities regional residents at the end of their lives with a comfortable setting where they also will be able to pass peacefully, without pain, and with their loved ones around them.
